Manchester CityOpponent (5-4-1 block)

Rest defenceThe 3-2 box behind the ball: how Manchester City attack without ever being counter-attackedGuardiola’s teams are remembered for possession, but the idea that keeps them on top is what happens in the three seconds after they lose the ball. Walk through the shape in possession, at the moment of loss, and once the opponent has escaped.Premier League · 5 min

Attacking side (4-3-3)Defending side (4-4-2)

RolesThe false nine: how a striker who drops deep breaks a back fourA false nine is not a striker who is bad at scoring. It is a striker who leaves the place a striker is supposed to be, and makes two centre-backs argue about who should follow. Three phases show why the argument is unwinnable.Concept · 5 min

Pressing side (4-3-3)Opponent (4-2-3-1)

PressingGegenpressing: why the six seconds after losing the ball are the best time to win it backCounter-pressing turns a mistake into a chance. The idea is older than the word, but the logic is exact: the moment a team wins the ball is the moment it is least organised. Here is the trigger, the trap, and the two ways it fails.Concept · 6 min

Back-three side (3-4-3)Opponent (4-4-2)

FormationsWing-backs in a 3-4-3: how five defenders become three and three attackers become fiveThe back three is not a defensive formation. It is a formation that changes shape more than any other, and the two players doing the changing are the wing-backs. Three phases show where they stand and why the width they give is the whole idea.Concept · 5 min

Low-block side (4-5-1)Possession side (4-3-3)

DefendingThe low block: how a 4-5-1 defends when there is no space behind itA low block is not parking the bus. It is a shape with rules: two lines twelve metres apart, every pass into the box contested, and the one moment the block chooses to step out. Here is the shape, what it gives away on purpose, and how it gets beaten.Concept · 6 min

Attacking side (4-3-3)Defending side (4-4-2)

SpaceHalf-spaces: the two lanes every defence forgets to defendDivide the pitch into five vertical lanes and the second and fourth are where modern attacks live. Nobody in a back four owns them, the angle to goal is open, and a pass received there can go anywhere. Three phases show why.Concept · 6 min

Attacking side (4-3-3)Defending side (4-4-2)

RolesThe inverted winger: why the wrong-footed wide player took over footballPut a left-footer on the right wing and every cut inside ends with the ball on his strong foot, facing goal. It cost the game its crossers and gave it Robben, Salah and Saka. Here is the mechanism, the full-back it needs, and what defences do about it.Concept · 5 min

Defending side (zonal)Attacking side

Set piecesZonal marking at corners: defending the space, not the playerA corner is the one moment when the attack knows where the ball is going and the defence does not. Zonal marking answers by ignoring the runners and owning the six metres where corners are scored. Three phases show the setup, the delivery, and why it looks like a mistake when it fails.Concept · 5 min

High-line side (4-3-3)Opponent (4-2-3-1)

DefendingThe high line: defending forty metres from your own goalA high defensive line looks like recklessness and is the opposite: it shrinks the pitch so the press can work and turns the offside rule into a defender. Here is the geometry, the step that catches ten players offside a season, and the one pass that ends it.Concept · 6 min
